InterventionA vast number of addicts and abusers cannot, or will not admit that they have a problem. Denial is a very common symptom of addiction. In such cases as these, it falls to family and friends to look for help.
To try and convince an individual that they have a problem, without professional help, can be nigh on impossible. At Lake Arrowhead, we have expert interventionists who can help with this. Waiting for an individual to realize that they need help can take forever. Meanwhile, the damage to health and relationships increases. A professional intervention can help to break through denial and convince an individual that they need help and that it is available. It is easy for family and friends to 'cover up' for an individual – for example by calling work or school to say they are sick. Until an individual is forced to experience the full effect of his or her behavior, they will not accept the need for treatment. For this reason, professional intervention can help both family and the individual. An intervention will involve family and friends in a non-judgmental confrontation. Prior to this meeting, those involved will normally meet to role play possible scenarios, to give them an idea as to what to expect. Interventions stand a better chance of success if conducted by people the individual knows and trusts. The individual can feel cornered and become angry or defensive. One of our highly experienced interventionists will serve as a mediator, guiding the meeting towards persuading the individual to seek treatment. |
