Meth Treatment Program

Methamphetamines are highly addictive, chemical variations of amphetamines, which affect the central nervous system. They can be snorted, smoked, injected or ingested orally and induce an initial intense 'rush' when first taken. They have a limited medical use in the treatment of narcolepsy, attention deficit disorders and obesity. Long term use almost always results in addiction, violent behavior, anxiety, insomnia, together with other forms of mood disturbance. Delusions, hallucinations and paranoia can also occur – lasting for months, or even years, after use of the drug has ceased.

It is common for meth users to lose teeth. Whilst not a direct result of the addiction, methamphetamines can cause a reduction in the production of acid-fighting saliva which, coupled with an increased thirst and a high intake of high sugar content carbonated drinks, increases the risk of tooth decay.

There are varying sexual side effects associated with methamphetamine use, including the ability to have prolonged sex, increased libido and sexual pleasure, but an inability to reach orgasm or physical release.

There are basically 3 types of users: high users, low users and binge users. Low users are generally casual users, with no psychological addiction; Binge and high-use abusers have a psychological addiction to meth and prefer smoking or injecting methamphetamine to achieve a faster and stronger high. Addiction occurs rapidly and continued taking of high doses may result in dangerously high body temperature and an irregular heartbeat. There is also the potential for cardiovascular failure or lethal seizures.

Here, at Lake Arrowhead, we offer cutting edge, highly successful treatment for all types of addiction. A longer program is generally indicated for treatment of meth addiction since it stays in the body longer than other drugs. After an initial evaluation, our highly qualified and experienced clinicians and therapists will design a treatment program specifically tailored to the needs of the individual. This treatment will include treatment for any psychoses or life threatening conditions such as high blood pressure or increased heart rate.
